The organisers are satisfied with the overall development of the German Open Championships. There were more starts and a big interest on the part of radio and television. Again, the German Open were a meeting point for dancesport enthusiast from all over the world. Five days of competitive dancesport on world-class level lay behind us. All who could not attend were able to get small glimpses of the competitions by our coverage with articles, photos and results.

After five long days at the 24th German Open Championships all 35 competition have finished. As usual the medals table shows a familiar result. Russia predominates with 16 gold medals and tied its record of the year 2006. Meanwhile, Germany and Italy duelled about the second place. Since the last few years these three nations have been ahead of all other nations.
Before the end of the last competition, Italy had a narrow margin. Because of the German victory Germany and Italy were neck and neck. The bronze medal of Segatori/Sudal made Germany win the duel. Italy became third. Altogehter, 25 nations are listed in the medals table.

The final round of the IDSF Grand Slam Standard was undoubted the closing highlight of the 24th German Open Championships. The world champions Benedetto Ferruggia/Claudia Köhler were in full cry in front of the local audience and won all dances superior. The second of the world ranking, Emanuel Valeri/Tania Kehlet, took the silver medal with second places in all five dances. The bronze medal stayed in Germany: Simone Segatori/Annette Sudol made sure of the third place with a narrow margin.

The six finalists of the Youth 10-Dance competition did their best from the early morning till the late evening. After four rounds of dancing Victor Burchuladze/Valeria Agikian were considered the favorites. They bettered themselves from competition to competition, starting with place four in the Latin section, going on with rank two in Standard and finishing the German Open with a gold medal. The silver medal went to their fellow countrymen David Manukyan/Karolina Maevskaya from Russia, who also had been finalists of the past two Youth competitions. With an overall sum of 17 to 18 points, Roman Gerbey/Ganna Pobereznyk from the Ukraine won the duel for the third place. All in all, 77 couples took part at this competition.

Not only the band of supporters, but also the finalists of the European Championships Boogie Woogie Main Class heated up the atmosphere in the sold out Beethoven Hall. Far ahead of the rest, the World Champions from France, William Mauvais/Maeva Truntzer, danced to the top. Runner-up were the second of the world ranking, Thorbjorn Solvoll Urskog/Susanne Barkhald Sandberg from Norway. The bronze medal went to Jonathan Haug/Nicole Martini from Sweden. The brand new European Champions declared to withdraw from the competitive dance sport to join a Swing showgroup in Canada.

Two years ago Gwenael Lavigne/Stephanie Godet defeated the world champions of that time at the German Open Championships for the first time. Last year they repeated their victory against the champions. At the last day of the 24th GOC they did a hat trick. They were followed by Daniele Ferraris/Antonella Ciccarelli from Italy. Andreas Hoffmann/Isabel Krüger gained the bronze medal for their nation Germany.

The competition Seniors II Standard was a duel between Italy and Germany. Four Italien couples and two from Germany were qualified for the final. Although Italy outnumbered the Germans the best marks were given to them. The acting world champions Michael Lindner/Beate Lindner won all dances and so emerged victorious. Their fellow countrymen Bernd Farwick/Petra Voosholz reached the second place followed by Giovanni Arnaldo Ciotti/Annalisa Risi from Italy.

It was the last competition of the youngest competitors at these German Open Championships. 29 couples took part in the tournament in the Hegelsaal. The Russian couple Egor Sivkov/Ekaterina Vidgof danced its third final. They were sixth in Juveniles I Latein, fifth in Juveniles II 8-Dance and finally they reached the cup by winning every final dance of the Juveniles I Standard. Rank two went to the winners of the Latin tournament Nikita Mjaksins/Luize Kascejeva from Latvia. The couple from Moldova Vladislav Untu/Alexandrina Oleteanu gained the bronze medal.

In an exciting Final of the Adults A-Latin Sergiy Bezprozvanniy/Olga Dedushkeyvich won through with four first places in the dances. They took the second gold medal for the Ukraine. One point less in the sum of all dances provided a narrow lead for Ferenc Bödi/Dia Gyurits from Hungary. The bronze medal went to Evgeny Urazgildeev/Anna Sozina from Russia. A total of 85 couples took part in this competition.

There was complete satisfaction at the final press conference of the 24th German Open Championships. Although there were three per cent less registrations a new record was established because of 3905 starts in the competitions. Managing director Harry Körner based this fact on the low quote of cancellations: 80 per cent of the registrated couples took part in the tournaments. In addition, there was an increase of registrations refering to the Juveniles and Juniors as well as the Seniors II. In contrast to that there were less registrations in the Youth competitions.
78 accreditation from 15 nations show the interest of the world wide media. Camera crews from local and nation wide television – ARD, ZDF, Region TV, RTL and SWR – daily entered the Liederhalle. Tonight there will be a simulcast on television (10.15 p.m. SWR).
The president of the German dance sport federation described the German Open as successful: the athletic significance as well as the meeting point of the responsible persons from all over the world.

At the next to last day of the 24th German Open Championships Russia leads the medals table with 14 gold medals, seven silver medals and five bronze medals. Italy stays on place two. Back in the top three is Germany.

Franco Formica/Oxana Lebedew won the WDC World Series Professional Latin competition with all first marks. The Beethovensaal was filled to the last seat when the couples danced their last rounds in an enthusiastic atmosphere. The competition ended with the german national anthem. The silver medal was awarded to Andrej Skufca/Melinda Törökgyörgy of Slovenia who ranked in second place in all dances. A tie of 17.5 points in the third place was decided in Skating: Markus Homm/Ksenia Kasper won the bronze medal by narrow margin, followed by Maurizio Vescovo/Andra Vaidilaite. Formica/Lebedew and Vescovo/Vaidilaite were rewarded with standing ovations. 53 couples participated in this competitions.

It was the first time since 2007 that the national anthem of Switzerland was played during the German Open Championships. Francesco Secchi/Sonja Emch became european champions and felt very happy about the cup. The title of the vice european champion went to Frode Pedersen/Tone Grude from Norway. The Germans Karl-Heinz Stahl/Sylvia Gauß defended their last year's third place.

260 couples took part in the Rising Stars Standard competition. The preliminary round was held on the day before because of the great amount of participating couples. In the evening event both, spectators as well as couples, gave their best and so the atmosphere was fantastic.
The former world champion Youth Standard Anastasia Glazunova and her new partner Alexey Glukhov emerged victorious by winning all dances. Paul Lorenz/Ekaterina Leonova from Germany got five best marks and finally became second. The bronze medalists were Ronalds Abols/Santa Vitenberga from Latvia.
