FEATHER BOAS TAKE THE FLOOR
There was plenty of volume on the dance floor in the Juniors I Latin category. The slim figures of the ladies were adorned with feather boas – on top, at the bottom, or both – which, in most cases, didn’t exactly work to their advantage. “Glitter” is not allowed in this age group, but excessive use of fabric and feathers isn’t the solution either. Ultimately, it’s the dancing that matters – and thankfully, it remained visible and rightly thrilled the audience in the Hegel Hall.
61 couples from 18 countries competed in the competition, with the German DanceSport Federation (DTV) strongly represented by 22 couples. Six couples reached the final, four of whom had already danced a final round earlier in the GOC – in the ten-dance competition. Danyil Dronyk and Victoriia Melnyk, Ukrainian champions in Latin, won all dances and secured their second GOC gold medal this year. Second place also went to national champions: Ronin Moldovan and Zsofia Gombos, who competed in the Children category last year, won the Romanian Juniors I championship this spring and had already placed third in the combination event at this year’s GOC. A delightful surprise came in third place: Nikita Ganopolsky and Emily Sofie Hortmann, registered as a couple only a few months ago, achieved third place in their very first joint competition.
